Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about Faith in Pure Land Buddhism
Self-powered practitioners do not understand the mind or the embrace of Amitabha’s unconditioned great compassion. Because of this, they diligently practice meditative virtues and attempt to see the Buddha through quieting their false minds.
Master Shandao calls this the Path of Importance through self-powered practices, not the Path set forth in Amitabha’s Great Vow called other-powered practice.
If they can awaken to Amitabha’s compassionate wish, they can change from the contemplation and recollection practices of the expedient Path of Importance, to the name-recitation practice in accordance with the real Path of Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow.
Just as the Contemplation Sutra says, “To attain this contemplation is to perceive the BODIES of all Buddhas. By perceiving these, one also realizes the MINDS of all Buddhas. The minds of all Buddhas are Great Compassion. They embrace sentient beings with unconditional Benevolence.”
