Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching of the Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School – the 18th Vow
“Excluded, however, are those who commit the five gravest offenses and abuse the right Dharma” – the intention of this sentence is to tell us the five gravest offenses and abuse of the right Dharma are the two most unacceptable and extremely wicked acts. It is warning us not to commit those acts under any circumstance. This is known as the teaching of inhibition.
For those who have not committed these acts, it is warning us to avoid them. However, if they have committed these acts, like those at the lowest level in the low tier, it tells us, “you should recite Amitabha’s name, otherwise you will fall into the lowest realms.” This is known as the teaching of Amitabha’s embrace.
(to be continued tomorrow)
